Human Factors in Health & Safety

Human factors in health and safety are the physical, psychological, social and organisational factors that influence how people behave and perform at work. They recognise that workplace incidents are not always caused by equipment or unsafe environments—people’s decisions, communication, workload, fatigue, stress and working conditions can also contribute.

Key human factors include:

  • Fatigue and tiredness – reducing concentration, reaction time and decision-making ability.

  • Stress and pressure – excessive workloads or deadlines can increase mistakes and unsafe decisions.

  • Training and competence – people need the right knowledge, skills and confidence to work safely.

  • Communication – unclear instructions, poor handovers or ineffective teamwork can create risk.

  • Distraction and workload – excessive demands or interruptions can affect attention and performance.

  • Attitudes and behaviour – complacency, risk-taking or a belief that safety procedures are unnecessary can increase risk.

  • Workplace culture – organisations where employees feel unable to raise concerns may allow hazards to remain unaddressed.

  • Leadership and supervision – effective leaders establish clear expectations and demonstrate that safety is a genuine priority.

  • Work design and environment – equipment, processes, workspace layout and procedures should support people to work safely.

For KW Life Solutions, human factors can provide an important link between health, wellbeing and workplace safety. Understanding how people think, feel and respond to workplace pressures can help organisations identify risks earlier, reduce human error, strengthen safety culture and create healthier, safer and more productive working environments.

Some people recognise immediately that they have experienced trauma.

Others may not connect their current difficulties with events that happened many years earlier.

Director, Engineering Company, Norfolk

(KW Life Solutions) provided dedicated counselling and support over a period of five months, which ultimately led to the employee’s full recovery and successful return to work. I firmly believe that without their intervention, this individual would not have been able to regain a normal life or reengage with their professional role.

The positive impact (KW Life Solutions) has had on this employee has also extended to me personally and the wider team at Power Mechanical. We are deeply grateful for their support, and our awareness and appreciation of mental health have grown significantly as a result.

Director, Clothing Manufacturer, Lincolnshire

I have worked with many neurodiverse professionals over the years, but I can honestly say that nobody has come close to Kim. His combination of expertise, empathy, and adaptability is unparalleled. He does not simply provide strategies; he teaches you to understand yourself, leverage your strengths, and navigate challenges in ways that are practical, realistic, and sustainable.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Kim to anyone who is autistic, has ADHD, or has struggled to find approaches that genuinely understand and support their unique needs. Whether you are newly exploring neurodiversity or have been navigating it for years, Kim’s approach is transformative, empowering, and deeply respectful of individual differences.

Working with him has been life-changing, and the insights and tools I gained continue to benefit me every day.
